I'm sorry but I have to disagree with Chas Freeman, "the voters are not happy about a two party option", the American public do have a choice, they don't have to vote for one of the top two, but the biggest problem is that the top two are very good at divide and rule, turning the election into a partisan race whereby the gullible play their part.

The USA is, first and foremost, a capitalist project and a capitalist country. Every other idea and principle subsumes under capitalism. When political candidates and national policies can be bought, then electoral politics means little to nothing. We can have democracy or capitalism but not both.

The decline of the US and its satillite countries that mimicked the neoliberal ideology model shared that decline due to the Neoliberal model.
The core of neoliberalism is to destroy the capacity of the state and transfer that capacity to the private sector. Replacing public servants or government employees, who have a loyalty to the well being of the citizens who employ them, and replacing government employees with contractors employed by private companies where the contractors loyalty is towards the shareholders of the contracting company.
In this situation governments become revenue collection agencies acting on behalf of private contractors whose motives are profit maximization.
In this process what is left of government staff have little or no engagement in the practical aspects of their functions of government. They merely manage tendering of contracts to contractors who are indifferent to the outcomes outside of the terms of their contracts.
This creates a farcical pandamonium of a racket to extract money from government that tries to maintain a facade of democratic government that facilitates the racket.
The result is countries that have adopted the neoliberal model becoming hollowed out failed states cannibolized by the corporations that have displaced representative governments. All in the name of improved efficiency. And we all outwardly fell for it. Well done.
