I love listening to Alistair Stewart because he’s so utterly stupid. As if India’s foreign policy is “a real mess” because it doesn’t fit your textbook. India’s foreign policy is designed for India not for your edification. “Playing footsie with Putin” from a country that has his oligarchs in the House of Lords…shessh

Well, Rory, one of the major reasons why India doesn't toe the Western narrative is YOU, aka England, and the horrid colonial loot and brutality. To this day, we don't trust you guys or the EU or the US, for that matter! We have no issues with Russia, so why should we fight them? When you guys ganged up on us in 1971, it was Russia who helped us. Unless they backstab us, we have nothing against them. India contributed so much militarily and financially during the 2 world wars, and how did you guys reward us? Do you even recognize our contributions? Forget recognition; you haven't even apologized for the colonial gen0cide! We are done bleeding for you guys.

China cannot be compared with India, as we are a democracy (aside from our corruption, which was unchecked till Modi came), and China is an autocracy and doesn't have to worry about elections or public opinions, unlike India. ALSO, West chose China and Pakistan, both dictatorships, over India historically. Besides, we're the largest democracy stuck in between the Taliban, Pakistan, China, and Myanmar, and we're all neighbours! So we'll play whatever games we need to thrive.

Palestine was indeed recognized by India, and they rewarded us with a plane hijack in the 80s! So the general public doesn't have much sympathy for them. Meanwhile, Israel doesn't diss us the way you do! You can hate Modi all you want, but the man changed India's trajectory for the better and we love him for it!

I loved the podcast about India. As a frequent flyer to India and being a native, I agree with Rory about being muddled but Alastair had such a wonderful positive take…thank you

@texasbluebonnet4303 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

The U.K. divorced India, and they are still adjusting to being independent, alone with so many poor people to take care of until this very day. And we the U S gov. have done the same thing in Afghanistan.

@anko7827 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

Western egoists thinking what they learnt is the only way world works, guess what as an Indian , after seeing the hypocrisy of the west, we choose India way, not my problem if you are ignorant.

@313gazi April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

It is wishful thinking, hoping that India s huge population, somehow could copy Chinese and become a counterweight to China to help West s decling power. It won't happen. China and India had no history spanned thousands of years, of hostility. They benefit each each other in many ways. India likes to talk the talk to impress western powers and get favourable treatment, but they would becer walk the walk. They have massive trade with each other. Additionally, India s society is too cast obsessed too fragmented, with all the flaws of democratic systems to ever achieve kind of economic status to ever match China. It is a pipe dream.

@2009kygal April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

Unfortunately, former presidents have a tradition of not commenting on the current administration, even when the US , metaphorically speaking, has its hair on fire.

@2009kygal April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

Isn't India nationalist and protective, probably a result of the bad taste in their mouths from their British experience.

@2009kygal April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

They just announced the tariffs will be on hold for 90 days, except for China and the Great Orange One has doubled down on them. Those foolish tariffs are still hanging over the heads of the US lies and trading partners.

@meghapai5427 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

“We did not succeed during the British Raj in creating a viable economic model..” – ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!! Your whole “model” was based on squeezing (read LOOTING) every last resource out of India! The lack of insight and objective understanding here is beyond ridiculous!!!!!!!

@stephfoxwell4620 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

This is awful. Like an O level history lesson.
David Starkey sums themselves two up very well.
Magical Thinkers.

@justhomas67 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

India will never be a superpower. why ? Indian mindset is built on serving the Western colonialists. So India will let all its science engineering maths and medical professionals to leave India and serve western nations. Almost all Chinese professionals stay back and serve in China.

@geordieinjapan April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

the swiss system sounds nice in theory, but
1: Brexit shows the UK isnt' great with referenda.
2: Switzerland just got gay marriage 5 years ago or so. Women got equal rights in the 90s. Its hyper conservative in a very bad way.

@ongchinlam4631 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

Let me say. Give another 50 years.will never make it. Okay

@pradeepsubramaniam789 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

Rory, maybe the west has to take some blame that the west sided with Pakistan leaving India to rely on Russia.

@TheWasim April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

India has already overtaken China in Population.

@pragathikumar9503 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

One of the rare podcasts where the host has a far better idea of India, its thinking, its foreign policy, its potential than the so called expert guest. India will grow, will add one British economy every decade for the next 3-4 decades. Potentially in 25 years have an economy the size of Europe, the 3rd most powerful military in a decade, a diaspora of 60-75 Mn by 2032. It's intrinsic instinct would be to be a force for global good, on things like helping other developing countries, climate, peace, trade, etc. What it won't do is be a lackey or military ally of any country, western or otherwise. Indians have had enough of western hypocrisy.

Im weighing in on the youth issue. Ive just come off a social media platform where I was so appalled by the lack of respectful discourse that i just disengaged but Im not sure that’s what a younger person would do. Everything was a personal attack, aggressive zero sum game approach. Incredibly concerning if this level of discourse is whats determining our politics.

I agree 100% with both of you about democracy. The LibDems in RNP(Ruislip,Northwood, Pinner) are moving more and more towards vityzens assembly.

@juanmillaruelo7647 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

Consider a proportional or transferable vote system.

@ParthaSarathyIppili April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

This is not at all possible ☑️

@sganjoo1 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

It's clear that these two don't know anything about India let alone the current international order. I have never seen anything more devoid of intellectual rigor than these two talking heads talking to each other. Hahaha I am no Modi fan but good lord, what are they teaching them at oxbridge?! It seems to me that they are just breeding airheads like Rory here and his buddies Mehdi Hasan and Imran Khan in Pakistan. Mind you, Imran Khan once told a reporter that Germany and Japan were allies in WWII because they were "geographic" neighbors. Hahahaha And, Mehdi Hasan told Richard Dawkins that he (Mehdi) actually believed in flying horses!~ Hahahahaha And, here is Rory opining about the state of Indian economy and how the Brits "tried" to build Indian economy when nearly every scholar argues that the Brits were just pillaging India for nearly 200 years (1757 to 1947). This channel is a joke and a comedy central hahahahahaha I don't think anyone can take anything these two jokers have to say seriously hahahahahaha

@TheSoLuna2 April 17, 2025 - 4:31 pm

Rory is an old dog who doesn't want to learn any new tricks – beyond what he knows. He will still be making a case about what's wrong with india, for the next decade, while india would keep moving on a new trajectory. Interesting conversation, though.
