Coal-burning plants now account for less than 20% of U.S. electricity generation, a drop from 50% in 2000, with existing coal plants contributing power to the grid only about 40% of the time.
Most utilities have also shifted towards cheaper and more efficient forms of electricity generation, such as solar, wind, and battery power, to cater to the increasing power demand driven by data centers, the report mentioned.
"Spending taxpayer and/or ratepayer dollars to reopen closed coal plants with uncertain maintenance needs and unpredictable future performance makes no sense, economic or otherwise," IEEFA said.

As if the pollution from burning oil isn't bad enough for expediting climate change, taking off all the brakes on the coal industry in this country only puts money in the pockets of billionaire donors to Trump as no doubt he promised them he would revive their industry. This just perpetuates the cycle of misery and sickness of the folks who get the coal out of the ground. Trump wants to gut the EPA and doesn't care about how filthy the air is when power plants generate power using this black death. He doesn't care about the rising sea levels and the loss of fresh water worldwide, and warming of the surface of the oceans that already has impacted so negatively species, including us! It's all about the money and short-term gains, never about long-term consequences.
